Broodstock Collection Data From Swartswood Lake

by Craig Lemon
Hatchery Superintendent
February 1, 2011

Broodstock for the NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife's Hackettstown Hatchery are collected each year from northern New Jersey lakes. Swartswood Lake, located in Sussex County west of Newton, is now a consistent source of quality breeders as well as a prime fishing location

New Jersey's walleye production began in 1989 with eggs obtained from a provincial hatchery in Ontario and state hatcheries in Pennsylvania and New York. Those eggs resulted in the state's first stockings later in 1989 in Monksville Reservoir (Passaic Co.) and Lake Hopatcong (Morris and Sussex counties).

Swartswood Lake (along with Greenwood Lake) was first stocked with walleye in June, 1992. Approximately 54,000 fingerlings (1"-2") were stocked that first year, with about 10,000 4" fish stocked every year since.

By 2000 the Swartswood walleye population provided its first breeders when 141 adults (72 females, 69 males) were netted. Those fish produced more than 150,000 eggs that year. Anglers who pursue walleye in the lake, and those who have followed the broodstock collection reports on the division's website, know how large the walleye can be in the lake.

Anglers wishing to sample the population for themselves can access the lake via the boat ramp available at Swartswood Lake State Park. With its campground and bathing beach, along with hiking trails and boat and kayak rentals, the park is an excellent destination for families as well as those looking only for quality fishing.

The following tables provide information about the size and weight of the walleye population. A quick glance at the overall weights and lengths in the past decade illustrates how the quality of the fish continues to increase, and hints at the great fishing available at Swartswood Lake.

For more information on the Hackettstown Hatchery, as well as articles on past years' broodstock collection visit the hatchery webpage.
