Delaware River Fishing Reports - 2009

The information below is primarily from Gary Conner, the voice of the Shad Hotline. Additional information is compiled by Mark Boriek, Principal Fisheries Biologist at the division's Lebanon Field Office. Reports from past years are also available. Please call the Shad Hotline 610-954-0577 or 610-954-0578 for the latest shad updates for the Delaware River.

FISHING REPORT - 5/26/09 (from Gary Connor)
TRENTON, THE HERRING BITE IS QUICKLY COMING TO AN END. WATER TEMPS WENT FROM 61-70 IN 3 DAYS. THIS RAIN WILL HELP LOWER TEMPS AND EXTEND THE SEASON A FEW DAYS. SHAD ARE STILL BEING CAUGHT IN TRENTON.

WE ARE LOOKING NORTH TO THE BUNKER BITE AT SANDY HOOK THIS WEEKEND IF POSSIBLE.

LEWIS FISHERY, STEVE, IS STILL CATCHING A FEW SHAD IN THE NET.

THE SMALL MOUTH BITE IS PICKING UP.

FISHING REPORT - 5/12/09 (from Gary Connor)
LEWIS FISHERY, STEVE REPORT:

Another good night Friday night. Seven roes and 3 bucks and 2 returned. Also had a bunch of catfish, gizzard shad and small-mouth bass. Saturday was slow which we come to expect. Only one roe. We'll be out there again tonight and most of this week

TRENTON, CAPTN D AND NEIL REPORT HERRING BITE STIL STRONG, STRIPERS ARE UP AT THE BRIDGES AND HIGHER.

WILL TRY THERE TOMORROW AFTERNOON WITH SOME FRIENDS.

FISHING REPORT - 5/1/09 (from Gary Connor)
WATER TEMPS ARE UP TO 65 DEGREES. THE BITE HAS SLOWED FROM LAMBERTVILLE TO SANTZ EDDY.

LAMBERTVILLE, MARK REPORTS VERY SLOW.

SANDTZ EDDY, RON REPORTS 2 SHAD FROM 6 BOATS, ONE BOAT TORE OUT ITS BOTTOM AND WAS RESCUED BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.

Potomac River: Over 80 American Shad (to 7 pounds), Hickory Shad, Gizzard Shad and Herring between two anglers boated on the morning and afternoon bite. What a fishery!!! No shad can be kept so the fish were stacked like salmon in the Joss Hole in Douglaston. The flutter was out fishing the darts in surrounding boats 10 to 1. Live lined herring for stripers with no hits.

13 REPORTS TONIGHT

TRENTON, JIM REPORTS THE STRIPERS ARE IN. HERRING CATCH IS HEATING UP BUT STILL HAS A WAY TO GO BEFORE IT PEAKS.

LEWIS FISHERY, MIKE REPORTS:
A lot of catching up to do today. After a good night Tuesday more bad hauls. Wednesday the temp dropped to 54. One buck shad, 11 smallmouth, 6 gizzard and a couple suckers. Thursday went up to 56. No shad, 6 smallmouth, 6 gizzard and one each of catfish and sucker. Friday was 59 with one buck, 5 smallmouth, a catfish, a gizzard and a quillback. We went out about an hour earlier on Friday. the first haul Saturday saw 5 bass, 2 catfish, 1 gizzard, 4 quillback, and 1 carp. The afternoon haul for the Shad Fest had 3 buck shad, one bass, one sucker and 3 quillback in it. The Temps were 57 and 60. Sunday the demonstration haul had 1 buck that was returned after many photos, 5 bass, 7 gizzard, and one walleye. Tonight will be a hot one. I am looking forward to cooler temps later in the week.

A good night last night. Kept 16 shad (11 bucks and 6 roe) and returned one. Also got a bunch of walleye (5) and Gizzard shad (43). A nice number of bass(7), carp(2), catfish(8), suckers(10) and quillback(6) too. Let's see if we can string two good nights together.

LAMBERTVILLE, NISH (THE MAN THAT GAVE US THE FLUTTER SPOON) 15 of 21 evening bite. 7 pound roe. 80% bucks. All but three on flat line two feet below the surface in 7.5 feet of water. New guy hooked on shad fishing.

FOUL RIFT, ED WENT 97 FOR 129 ONLY 2 ROE. THIS WAS A 3 DAY TOTAL.

I GO AWAY FOR A WEEK AND THE SHAD ARE EVERYWHERE.

25 REPORTS,

TRENTON, HERRING FISHERMEN CATCHING SHAD

LEWIS FISHERY, MIKE’S BEST REPORT THIS SEASON 21 SHAD, 15 WERE BUCK; SO, THE PEAK IS STILL SOUTH OF LAMBERTVILLE. NOTE THERE WERE ALSO 18 SMALLMOUTH IN THE NET. A VERY NICE SIGN FOR THOSE THAT WANT TO FISH THIS AREA AFTER THE SHAD HAVE MOVED ON.

LAMBERTVILLE, THANKS FOR ALL THOSE REPORTS. LAMBERTVILLE WAS THE PLACE TO BE. LAMBERTVILLE IS THE PLACE TO BE THIS WEEK TOO.

EASTON, JOE SHAD REPORTS THE BITE IS ON IN THE EASTON AREA. JOE REPORTS SHAD ARE BEING CAUGHT NORTH OF EASTON. THAT’S A GOOD SIGN FOR THE SHAD TOURNEY.

TRENTON, THE HERRING AND STRIPER BITE HAS PICKED UP. ONE BOAT REPORTED 8 STRIPERS 26-30" AND ONE OVER 36". FIRST FISH WAS IN THE BOAT BY 7:30 AM.

A SEPARATE REPORT ON THE "DUDLEY ROBERTS INTERNATIONAL" TOURNAMENT WILL FOLLOW SO THOSE NOT INTERESTED CAN EASILY DELETE.

LAMBERTVILLE- PETE REPORTS 8 BUCK 2 ROE. NOTE, ONE HAD A LAMPREY.

NJ SHORE CHAD REPORTS - VERY LITTLE ACTION

NISH REPORTS TROUT FISHING GREAT NEAR HIS CABIN.

Delaware River Report, 4/6/09
In Delaware Bay, biologist Russ Allen of our Bureau of Marine Fisheries is netting, tagging & releasing a few A. shad but there are far more striped bass that he's catching, tagging & releasing. In Lambertville, NJ, the Lewis Fishery has netted only 2 buck shad so far. Likewise, Delaware Bay commercial gill netter George Kumor has caught only 2 A. shad, one on 3/25 & one on 4/3. He claims they are late, & hopes to have good catches next week. Mostly bunker & striped bass in the bay at this time.

LISTEN UP**** SATURDAY 4/4 WILL BE A GREAT DAY FOR BOAT PREP OR HONEY DOO’S.

SATURDAY WILL NOT BE A GOOD DAY TO BE ON THE RIVER FULL OF TRASH WITH WINDS PAST 50 KNOTS.

SUNDAY’s WEATHER IS LOOKING PRETTY GOOD.

TRENTON, BIG FRANK REPORTS THE HERRING ARE IN, SPOTTY BUT HERE.

BARNEGET BAY, STRIPERS ARE HITTING CLAMS

LAMBERTVILLE, LEWIS FISHERY, STEVE REPORTS, THE SHAD ARE HERE, 1 BUCK IN THE NET LAST NIGHT,ALSO SMALLMOUTH,CHUB,WALLEYE AND TURTLE.

LAMBERTVILLE, MICKEY REPORTS 3 GUYS WENT 13-21 WITH MANY MORE KNOCK DOWNS IN 2 HOURS LAST NIGHT. MIKE (8) LANDED HIS FIRST SECOND AND THIRD SHAD. WELCOME TO THE CLUB.
