When you buy a $50 Conserve Wildlife license plate, you not only let everyone know you believe in conservation. You let them know you're doing something about it.

More than 80% of your payment, or $4 out of every $5, goes directly toward preserving our state's endangered wildlife. That's crucial, because the New Jersey's endangered, threatened and nongame wildlife protection program receives no dedicated state funding and must depend completely on contributions from the general public.

Revenues from license plate sales (and the wildlife check-off on the state tax form) have made a difference:

Since the 1980's, bald eagle nests have increased from 1 to more than 100.
After a 30-year absence, the peregrine falcon has been restored as a breeding bird with between 20 and 24 pairs nesting in recent years.
There are now approximately 500 nesting pairs of osprey throughout New Jersey. In fact, the restoration of osprey was so successful that the osprey was the first species to be removed from the endangered species in 1985. Currently, it is still considered a threatened species in New Jersey.
Wetland habitats are now protected for endangered and threatened species, including the bog turtle, wood turtle, and barred owl.
Funding is provided for the Conserve Wildlife Matching Grant Program.

But more still needs to be done!

The population of Red knots, a small delicate shorebird, continues to decline along the Delaware Bay.
Nesting populations and chick productivity of piping plovers, least terns and black skimmers are all down, either because of predation, nest-area flooding, or both.
Habitat for bog turtles, a federally listed endangered species, urgently needs to be preserved from loss,
fragmentation and degradation.
Timber rattlesnake dens are under significant development pressure.

All these achievements are crucial to wildlife survival. And all were accomplished thanks to public support.
