Bog Turtle Habitat Management & Restoration in NJ

Most bog turtle habitat in New Jersey is in dire need of management and restoration. Encroachment of woody species and invasion by purple loosestrife, phragmites, multiflora rose, cattail, Japanese stiltgrass and reed canary grass are the primary threats to habitat quality.

Most of these plants are extremely difficult to control. However, as aggressively as these plants colonize, the Division's Endangered and Nongame Species Program is combating these invaders with equivalent ferocity through creative methods, including grazing, biological control and targeted herbicide application.
