Degraded habitat

In 2000 this bog turtle habitat was shaded by red maples and speckled alder. Speckled alder is the second most common woody plant to invade bog turtle habitats in New Jersey. Its only natural control is the beaver, which relishes its bark. However, most bog turtle habitats are too small and isolated to support beaver activity.
