Each
year approximately 575,000 trout are stocked in the state's public waters during
the spring. Standard production trout average 10.5 inches but range up to 12 inches.
Trout season officially began in all waters open to public angling on Saturday,
April 9 at 8 a.m.
By
opening day, approximately 173,000 trout were stocked in the state's
freshwater streams, lakes, ponds and impoundments. Among those stocked pre-season
were approximately 4,000 to 6,000 surplus broodstock weighing 3 to 5 pounds
each and ranging from 14 to 22 inches. Many of these fish remain, awaiting anglers.
In
2004 the Division stocked higher numbers of broodstock in nine trout-stocked ponds
and small lakes. This program is being continued in 2005 in a different set of
waters which will receive five to ten times more broodstock than they have traditionally

Anglers are reminded that changes in the stocking schedule means 70 lakes and ponds are being stocked one week earlier than in past years, with most being restocked during Week 1.
