2009 Deer Season and Fall Turkey Permits Available for Sale Tuesday, October 13

October 7, 2009

The NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife reminds hunters that on Tuesday, October 13 at 10:00 a.m. all leftover and unclaimed Fall Turkey Permits and all Non-Lottery Deer Permits will become available for sale. Permits will be available until the permit quota is reached or the season ends, whichever comes first.

Permits can be purchased at all license agents or online. Hunters are reminded that permits purchased online will take 7 - 10 business days for delivery. Hunters do have the option of paying for express delivery.

Leftover and unclaimed lottery permits for deer seasons at Fort Dix (Zone 37) and Monmouth Battlefield (Zone 64) will also become available at that time. These are the only two "Special Areas" that will be available after the lottery. There will be no leftover sale of permits for the Atlantic County Park System, Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge and Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.

If you missed the lottery you might be interested in subscribing to the Division of Fish and Wildlife's e-mail lists. The Division typically sends out e-mail notices of reminders and important notes throughout the year. For information and to subscribe visit

Due to the November 18th mandatory hunter orientation session at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Zone 64 Shotgun Permits will only be available for sale from October 13 until 11:59 p.m. on November 1. Hunters with questions regarding the orientation session should call the park at 732-462-9616.

All lottery award winners are reminded that they have until 11:59 pm on Sunday, October 11 to claim their permit(s). Permits that remain unclaimed will be returned to the permit quota. The Division will not know until the morning of Tuesday, October 13, exactly how many leftover permits will become available for sale. The Leftover Permit Availability Chart will be updated at that time. It can be viewed online at

Fall Turkey Permits will be available for the following Turkey Hunting Areas: 1-5, 8, 9, 11, 20-22.

Bow, muzzleloader and shotgun permits for deer will be available for the following Deer Management Zones: 1-19, 21 - 31, 34-36, 41-43, 45-51, 55, 63, 65, 67 and 68. Leftover permits for Zone 37 will be available for Bow, Shotgun and Muzzleloader Seasons. Leftover permits for Deer Management Zone 64 will only be for Permit Shotgun Season.

Reminder: In order to harvest a buck during the Permit Bow, Permit Shotgun or Permit Muzzleloader seasons, you must purchase an Antlered Buck Permit for each season in which you would like to harvest a buck. Each Antlered Buck Permit is $28.00 for adults and $12.00 for youths and is in addition to the regular antlerless deer permit.

NOTE: If you purchase an Antlerless Permit PRIOR to the start of the season, and wish to harvest a buck, you must purchase the Antlered Buck Permit by the dates indicated below. You cannot purchase the Antlered Buck Permit once the season has begun if you have already purchased an antlerless permit for that season.

Antlered Buck Permits must be purchased by the following deadlines:

  • Antlered Buck Permit - Bow - October 31, 2009
  • Antlered Buck Permit - Muzzleloader - November 30, 2009
  • Antlered Buck Permit - Shotgun - December 17, 2009
Please see the 2009 Hunting Digest for more details.

Hunters are also reminded that Turkey Hunting Areas and Deer Management Zones are NOT the same. It is the hunter's responsibility to know in what zone/area and season he/she wants to hunt. Hunters are urged to review their permit before leaving the license agent or completing the online transaction. Once the online transaction is completed or a permit fee is paid for and the buyer leaves the store there will be no returns, exchanges or refunds. There are no exceptions.
